Biomed BBQ Dinner

Congratulation to all lecturers who got promoted and also to all first year biomedic students who has been selected to be in UPM.

Biomed Odyssey Orientation Week

After months of discussion, weeks of preparation and a couple of sleepless nights, the Biomed Odyssey finally draws to a close.

What may seem like an endless orientation for the juniors, is actually a unique way from us seniors, of welcoming all juniors as part of our big family in UPM. Here I would like to thank all the seniors who worked as committee members to ensure the realization and smooth running of all events during orientation week. Next, I would like to give a special acknowledgment to lecturers and staffs of Biomedical Science Department, who gave support in our activities.

Last but not least, from the bottom of my heart, I thanked and congratulate all the juniors who made this orientation worth 'wild' and unlike any other. I represent the organizing committee to apologize for any misbehavior and misconduct from us, and hope that any offensive action may never remain as a torn in our relationship.

OK enough writing. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Now I have a video to summarize what our orientation has been. Enjoy!!

Proclamation of UPM FPSK Biomedicine Club Constitution

"It is necessary that with one hand and one voice the colonist should use their best energies to launch the ship of State in deep waters. I trust that every good wish that I am now addressing for the future progress of this colony will be amply realized ..."

Sir William Robinson, Governor of Western Australia, 1890

Biomedicine students welcome the dawn of student self governance in Fakulti Sains Bioperubatan UPM, in 1997 where students established what would be the blueprint of Biomedicine Club FPSK UPM now. After more than ten years of establishment, I as Club President, emboldened by a sense of civic pride and entrusted by democracy of people, celebrate the proclamation of the Perlembagaan Kelab Bioperubatan (Biomedicine Club Constitution).

Proclamation of the new constitution will be an important symbolic episode in club history. Not only did it herald a real change in the form and composition of club governance, but it would also be contrived as the moment when the club finally come of age.

Biomed Badge

Thank you to all club members for your support on our club badge sales orientation week edition. We will be glad to promote more club merchandises for members' collection in future.

Lifelossophobia....dissected

lifelossaphobia
by JS

Everybody wants to "live the life"... lately this has got me thinking.
what does that really mean? For Jeff the teenager, living the life would be playing computer games till dawn, bumming out, having fun with friends, partying etc etc...Tim on the other hand is the man who fills every second of his life with activity , sometimes, all he wants is rest. Remember these two characters for they bear great importance in this literature.

I have to admit, on most days, I'm Tim. I spend every hour doing something....anything..everything. This disease i shall coin as "lifelossophobia". Allow me to explain.

Ever get the feeling that life is not satisfying? Like when you wake up and suddenly you see that all you were doing in the past was just wasting time. Where has the past 10 years gone to? Fleeting images of parties, blur faces, and a few pinpoints of bright moments float lazily across you mind.

"Oh God , Im a loser...." ( eyes widely opened and stunned )

then suddenly, it hits you, a most astounding cognitive revelation has occured,

"angels blowing horns and rays of light appear"

No more shall i waste precious minutes in lethargic bliss. I shall conquer. I shall DO and BE.

Thisis the point of time in history that the syndrome known as lifelossophobia began. This disease is prone to affect intellectuals, active lifestyled, go-getting, high-on-confidence people but sometimes the average bum(me...)

And so the suddenly the lifeless dweeb becomes a full time Life-a-holic.

we(i) as humans tend to have a flaw. We over do things. And who am I to blatantly flout the norms of the majority? A week? A month? These durations are bearable. but after a year, things get hazy. Suddenly everything seems to slam into a big wall. The last noteworthy progress that i have made in my life was 60 days behind.

In the movies, this point is the insert-your-lifechanging-event segment where the protagonist suddently has an "aha" moment. Sadly we mortals have no such help from life. Most of the time we never change and continue spinning down the road to oblivion.

This syndrome called lifelossophobia causes a high level of stress on the nervous system. After a certain amount of time, Things start misfiring. Symptoms that are exhibited are : loss of friends, extreme fatigue, jerk-ism(a disturbing behavior displayed by .... jerks) and being downright mediocre in all pursuits.

The key to overcoming lifelossophobia is actually recognizing that you are currently suffering from it. As they say, to kill a deer, first you need to know what a deer is or else the family is gonna be feasting on badger, bear, or the occasional writer. You never know what you will find in a forest these days.

The correct drug to battle this disease is called "Survival of the fittest/ culling of the weak". As individuals in this vast world, our choices are unlimited, pleasures to be discovered are infinite and our destiny has a million different endings. Then arrives the ultimate party pooper, time, which effectively castrates all our dreams and leaves them as unfertile rabbits in a sea of hot sexy bunnies ; useless. We mortals simply do not have enough time to do everything. ( hearing a big DUUUH from the audience now)

Next it comes to the pick and roll stage. No its not a basketball strategy. What this means is that we pick our best skills, our forte, our prime kahoona of abillities and roll on with life holding them tightly to our bosom. Be forewarned, this is not as easy as it seems. After going through this stage, i solemnly tell you "leaving part of you to rot and die really hurts". It feels like you're actually LEAVING A PART OF YOU TO ROT AND DIE!.

If you are not suicidal and dead by now, look on the bright side. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Little by little, i notice that this time I'm not Tim.(for reference, see first paragraph) Under certain circumstances, suddenly i become Jeff. On this note i stress that Jeff is more sociable, fun, and confident than Tim. Life looks livable again. Armed with a bevy of tricked out, glamorous distilled skills and abundant time, i leave my dying old self behind and take the reins of my own life back from the dust.

Pick and roll, fight lifelossophobia....

Biomedic Intervarsity Representative Meeting

It started in UPM, next UKM and now the 3rd Biomedic Intervarsity Meeting was held at Pharmacy Building, Medicine Faculty of Universiti Malaya. From 2 universities at the beginning, our league of representatives (or should I say League of Biomeds) has grown to 6 universities: UM, UKM, UPM, USM, UIAM and IMU.

Our meeting was held in two sessions. During the morning session, UPM, UKM and UM discussed in detail of the planning for our upcoming joint event in 2010, The Malaysian Symposium on Biomedical Science. For the first time, proper plans and proposals are brought forward on the discussion table, where UKM and UM offered great tentative ideas in addition to what is proposed by host university, UPM. We discussed on obstacles such as funding and publicity, plus agreed the establish committee members for the program by end of June.

During the evening session, UIAM, USM and IMU joined us and we had numerous ice breaking. As USM and IMU were new members in the 'league', the session was more focused on how to bring participating universities together, despite geographical barriers. All of us agreed that the Internet was the greatest mean of communication and establish a forum for voices of biomeds to be heard. At the end of the meeting, an open discussion was held. What started of as a simple voicing of issue related to biomedicine future in Malaysia, turned out to be a moment of experience sharing.

From this sharing, everyone in the meeting had a clear idea of the situation of biomedicine course and its student in each respective universities. Knowing that fact would enable us to understand and help each other, in a constructive manner. Thus, with high hopes bringing all of us closer together as a national entity.

Journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Personally, I'm glad I took that first step in promoting networking among universities.

Biomedic Hands On

As part of our efforts to promote awareness and instill interest about biomedicine among the younger generation typically school students, the club had organize Biomedic Hands On program. Students from SMK Clifford Kuala Kangsar, Perak was selected to be participants of our program.

The one day program began with a briefing session where students were given exposure and general introduction about the medicine, biomedicine and health science courses available in our humble faculty. The briefing ended with a short Q&A session, where students and teachers voice out their inquiries about certain misconception about biomedicine and qualification pre requisite to enroll in this faculty.

Next, our program continued with a trip to the anatomy museum in the faculty. Over there, students were introduced to the wonders and complexity of the human body. Brief introduction was given about the body parts, from bones, muscles, organs and also the entire human fetus. After seeing how a healthy body looked, students were shown infected or diseased body part, including disease infection, body irregularity and also cancer.

The program continued with practicals done in two labs, the anatomy dissection hall (ADH) and the multi-purpose lab 1 (aka power lab). During the practical session, students were given the opportunity to conduct real hands on experiments and anatomy observation.

Nonetheless, facilitators were always there to demonstrate and assist in the learning process by any means possible. The organizing committee also not forgetting the lecturers, tutors and also lab personnel who gave so much support to our program, despite their busy schedule.

The program ended with a short closing, where souvenirs were given to speakers, lecturers, teachers and also facilitators as a token of appreciation. After photography session, students and facilitators waved good bye and shake hands of gratitude.

The general public are still in the midst of misunderstanding of what biomedicine truly is. Actions must be taken to promote awareness, thus future graduates would consider biomedicine as their field of study, alternative to medicine.
